New Seasonal - River Toms, English IPA

River Toms, English IPA

Spring/Summer Seasonal 2014

6.8% ABV • 55 IBU

We are excited for the release of our second seasonal brew, River Toms.  Since the day we opened (four months ago, tomorrow) the question was asked, "When are you going to make an IPA?"  "Ummm not for a while," was our initial response, an IPA didn't fit our UK and Irish-style portfolio.  The inquiries became more frequent and our fan's disappointment was extremely apparent.

The origin of India Pale Ales can be traced back to the British Navy and tradesmen of the 1700's.  The style was created out of necessity, not preference, and has an incredible history. Learn more with these two articles from BeerAdvocate and MoreBeer.

"River Toms" is a play on the River Thames (pronounced temz), which begins at the English Channel and flows directly through London; much like the Toms River begins at the Barnegat Bay and flows through Toms River Twp.

Unlike most American IPAs, this English-style IPA is a complex, full bodied amber ale with a rich malt backbone. It is brewed only with English hops (East Kent Golding, Challenger, and Sovereign), then dry-hopped with both East Kent Golding and Fuggles for their distinctive floral, citrus, and spicy aromas.

Weighing in at 55 IBU and 6.8% ABV, River Toms is by far Rinn Duin’s hoppiest ale and first brewed north of session-style (5% ABV or less).

"Big Brew" in Celebration of Nat'l Homebrew Day - May 3

The Ocean County Homebrewers Club invite you to join them as part of the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) BIG BREW - in celebration of National Homebrew Day.

No experience is needed to participate; the Big Brew is about companionship, friendship, and the shared love of flavorful beer.  Each year, the Big Brew brings together thousands of homebrewers from around the world, all brewing the same beers simultaneously. More than 7,000 homebrewers worldwide are expected to participate in 2014.

This is the OC Homebrewers 1st annual Big Brew. The first hour is dedicated to Q&A with Rinn Duin's brewers, followed by mash in (the start of the brewing process) around 1:00.

Of the three official recipes, the OC Homebrewers chose Regal Royal Pale Ale. Staying true to Rinn Duin's style, the recipe will be modified to create an English-American Hybrid Pale Ale.

Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks or lunch, the brewing process lasts about 5 hours.

What:    Big Brew
Where:  Rinn Duin Brewing - 1540 Rt 37 W, Toms River, NJ 08755
When:   Saturday, May 3, 2014

St. Patrick's Day Weekend Extended Hours

For many, St. Patrick's Day is not just a day to celebrate Irish heritage and culture, but a month-long event that includes parades, friends & family, kilts, bagpipes, and everything green.

Along the shore, March 2 was Belmar's Parade, and this Saturday is Ocean County's Parade in Seaside.  Klee's Bar & Grill, Bum Roger's Tavern, and Chef Mike's Atlantic Bar & Grill will have St. John's Irish Red on draft

For St. Patrick's Day weekend, Rinn Duin Brewing will have extended hours in The Pub:

Members of the Shamrock & Thistle Pipes & Drums band will treat us to Irish music on Friday evening.

Unnamed Chocolate Rye Porter

On Wednesday, February 26 we brewed the first pilot batch of Unnamed Chocolate Rye Porter.  Porters are an English style similar to Stouts, but use dark malts instead of Roasted Malt for color and flavor.  Much like a classic Porter, we used dark Chocolate Malt to craft the flavors you'd expect with one unique difference; the addition of Rye Malts as well as Barley.  The Chocolate Rye is kilned much like it's Chocolate Barley counterpart, which creates familiar notes of toffee, caramel, and roasted; in addition to Rye's characteristic spice.

Rye (left) and Chocolate Rye (right)

Unnamed Chocolate Rye Porter was hopped with both Fuggles and Sovereign, which will provide a soft, fresh, and fruity aroma; accentuated through the English Yeast.  This beer should be ready for tasting toward the end of March.

Have a great idea for its name?  Let us know!

Our Newest Brew: Pota Caifé, Dry Irish Coffee Stout

For months, people asked the question, "If you're an Irish brewery, why don't you have a stout?" and our answer was, "Soon."  Just three weeks ago we brewed a pilot batch of a Dry Irish Stout and visited Grover's Mill Coffee Roasters in West Windsor, NJ

L-R: Dark Tanzanian, Darker Tanzanian (custom) & Espresso beans

At Grover's Mill, the morning began with a sampling of half a dozen coffee varieties.  The roasts started light and got subsequently darker until we found the perfect bean for our stout; Dark Tanzanian.  But it wasn't dark enough for our liking, so they made a custom roast called Darker Tanzanian.  Grover's Mill description of Dark Tanzanian is:
100% Organically shade grown coffee from Southern Tanzania is said to be some of the finest Arabica coffee in East Africa.  This smooth, yet flavorful coffee is a house favorite.

Pota Caifé (pot of coffee, in Gaelic) will be available, in limited quantity, this weekend at the brewery only.  Our plan is to release Pota Caifé St. Patrick's Day weekend, beginning March 14.

Tasting room hours this weekend are: Thurs & Fri 4:00-8:00 pm, Saturday 1:00-7:00 pm

Trinity and Lawnmower One-Off's

When we brewed Trinity Smoked Scottish 70 and Lawnmower English Blonde back in December, 15 gallons of each was reserved to make a one-off.  According to RateBeer.com:

"One-off beers are typically created specifically for a single festival or limited-attendance event, and these are beers which the brewer does not intend to brew ever again and which are no longer available after the event is over."

The Trinity one-off was fermented with bourbon soaked oak chips and the Lawnmower one-off was dry hopped with Australian Galaxy (giving it citrus and passion fruit aromas).  Both will served exclusively in The Pub when we open this month.
